Note: the following message was posted by a spammer. Normally I delete these, but in this case the English is so atrocious it made me laugh. In another message from the same day, the same spammer told me "Your internet is perfect". I wish I could say the same about his post generating software.

I am happy for this priceless brilliant page; this may be the kind of subject that sustains me though out the day. We’ve consistently heard been not too long ago looking shut to with your web-site ideal after I observed about these from a near companion and was delighted when I was inside a position to acquire it pursuing looking out for a while. Being a eager blogger, I’m pleased to view other citizens taking gumption and including for the neighborhood. I just wanted to comment to exhibit my comprehension for any upload because it is especially inviting, and lots of writers do not get the credit they have earned. I’m good I’ll be back yet again and will ship a few of my partners.

Mostly I agree with you, but I can see a time when there will not be any option to distribute apps via manual download and install. What if Apple decides at some point to close up the OS entirely and wall it off like iOS? Apple doesn't have to give you root access if they don't want to, and they could lock it down so that you can't install any unapproved applications. We could reach a point where the only way to install something by hand on a Mac is to "jailbreak" the system (or "root" it, rather). (The FreeBSD license of the core operating system won't help here, either, since the GUI is licensed separately and Apple could either replace Darwin or require a very restrictive license for OS X as a whole.)

At the moment, I'm not worried about Apple taking away root, but if any company tried it I would expect it to be Apple. Honestly, I really expect that at some point they will transform the Mac from a personal computer into some sort of information appliance. The iPad may be foreshadowing the future of the Mac.

Now I myself am coming from a background steeped in open source. I started using Linux in 1996 and I spent several years as a sysadmin (mostly RedHat). Even before that I was always looking for more computer freedom than the majority had available. I ran OS/2 before Linux, and earlier still my DOS was made by Digital Research and shareware and freeware were always my first choices for applications. So the Big Brother attitudes of Apple and the game console makers are a turn-off for me. I am slowly resigning myself to it, because the more I want to get into the game industry, the more willing I am to play by their rules.

I don't like this either, but no one forces you to use the OS X app store. The danger here becomes when OS X users expect all applications to be delivered through the app store, like on all the other iCrap. Then, they'll stop seeking applications from other places, and the market for your program dries up on OS X unless you agree to their terms. But they can never stop you from distributing your app as a dmg or pkg that people just download, so it'll always be there.

You're welcome. I hope the information is useful. I've never written for others before, and I'm still learning this stuff myself, so I'm not sure if I'm really presenting things in a way that others can use. I'm trying, though.

My next major post is probably going to be presenting a sample program that is a Mandelbrot set viewer. It's not a game, of course, but it demonstrates using SDL. Benoit Mandelbrot died this past week, so I was inspired to create it in honor of his work.

Wow, awesome timing. You've published this and your later article on CMake as I'm embarking on this very task. Thanks for the articles!
